CHAPTER 27

Maybe it was the candlelight. Maybe it was the pregnancy, but Elise was glowing. Just radiant.

She raised her hand to her face and touched her mouth. “Do I have something in my teeth?” she asked. “Or did I dribble on my chin?”

Too overwhelmed with her beauty to speak, he just shook his head.

“What is it?” she asked. “You’re staring.”

“You’re beautiful,” he murmured in awe.

Her green eyes narrowed, and she stared at him. “Are you trying to manipulate me again?”

A pang struck his heart—of regret and despair. “You’re never going to trust me,” he said. It didn’t matter how slow he went, how little pressure he exerted. “You’re never going to accept my proposal.”

“You rescinded it,” she reminded him. With—was that—a trace of disappointment?

If she was disappointed, maybe she had been more tempted to accept than he’d realized. Or he was just grasping at straws.

But Elise was the one grasping the straw in a tall glass. Closing her eyes, she took a long draw and moaned in delight.

And his body tightened with desire. She was so damn beautiful, so sensual...even more so now that she was glowing. It wasn’t fair. How could he be patient when it was killing him not to touch her, to taste her?

She swiped her tongue across her bottom lip. “You sure you don’t want to try this shake?” she asked. “Eggnog. It’s so good.”

He wanted to taste it but not through the straw. He wanted to taste it on her lips, on her tongue...in her mouth. “Elise...” He cleared the desire from his throat. “I’m not an eggnog fan.”

“You don’t know what you’re missing.”

But he knew all too well. He was missing her. He’d been missing her since she’d moved out of their house, and not just since the other night but since he’d done the stupidest thing he’d ever done: filed for divorce.

But he couldn’t tell her that—it would be manipulative. So he pushed aside how much he wanted her, how much he ached to be with her again. And he asked about her running the city and even about Jeremy and he told her about the practice, about his new client—the single mom going after her kids’ father for back child support.

“It’s not criminal,” she remarked.

“No, it is,” he insisted. “It’s criminal that he’s not helping her raise their kids—not physically and not financially.” But Neil was going to make certain that he helped—whether the man wanted to or not. “I hope that’s not why you were nervous about having kids with me, because you thought I might take off like your dad did.”

She flinched and pushed away her shake, as if she suddenly felt queasy.

He did, his stomach clenching with dread that she’d had such doubts about him.

“I just wanted to wait until I was sure of me,” she said.

“You can be sure of me, too,” he said. “Sure that I love you for you. Always have. Always will. From the first moment I saw you.”

She giggled. “Staring at you...you caught me staring.
